Such diversity in the winners.

I noticed they added the State of Emergency and Storm Alert only about 12 hours after the Governor announced it. They're improving.

I look at the list of winners - Virginia.gov included - and I wonder how they pick the winners? The sites are all very 20th Century, and all they do is copy each other. Is it a battle to see who buys the Center the best vacation trip? Or do they just put the names up on a dartboard and blindly take shots?

BK, any thoughts on this now that you're free to talk?

The government portal game has been pretty stagnant for a while. The portals all coast along copying each other and hoping that it will be their turn next. Line them up and you'll see what I mean. There's been very little innovation for a number of years, and features that used to be great ideas have floundered due to lack of interest. That makes it hard to pick who stands out, when none of them really do.

As an entertaining aside, I sent VI/Virginia.gov an e-mail card congratulating them on doing well in the Best of the Web contest (sure, it wasn't a great placing, but it was in the top ten. And it's the polite thing to do). Their management, as every good servant of the people would do, promptly requested to have their e-mail address removed from my mailing list. No "thanks" or "Doing our Best." Just a rude flip of the finger.

Hard to believe people think VI has a problem with the way they deal with the public...
